Growth Through Crisis

By Linda Shepherd

“Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him,; but I will defend my own ways before Him” – Job 13:15

Have you been in crisis? Are you able to say what Job said: “Though He slay me, yet I will trust Him?” Here is a man who had lost everything, yet his trust was still in God. Maybe you feel like Job in some ways. A crisis can serve as a test to learn where our faith lies. Our faith must be in God. Are we taking it upon our own selves to figure things out and handle our own emotions? Only through Christ can our emotions be handled. God gives us wisdom, and He wants to give us wisdom instead of leaving us to think things through in our own minds. We must ask Him to give us this good gift.

The extend to which we understand and believe the Word of God will also be tested in our lives when we go through crisises. With the Word of God in our hearts, we can be established, strengthened, and settled while going through difficult times (1 Peter 5:10). We must not wait until we find ourselves in crisis to go to God’s Word. Staying and living in His word will prepare us for the crisis that each of us will surely face one day — and we cannot wait until then to learn what God’s Word says.

A crisis can be a great teacher for us. We can be broken and healed through a crisis, or we can be hardened and embittered. A crisis will teach us humility, faith, perseverance, and a deep trust in God if we choose to learn form it. A crisis can be the best thing that happened to us, giving us wisdom and compassion for others, an understanding of our own relationship with God, and a soft heart that allows us to minister out of our own troubles. Remember—God is not trying to hurt us when we go through these things. He is trying to teach us and grow us up in His might. He wants us to be more like Him.
